Saddle Blazer Half Marathon Training Days 13-14

I said I would post about yesterday's training yesterday, but it turns out that I lied.  After returning home from the gym I made my husband dinner, cracked open a Karbach Hopadillo and watched a replay of the Chiefs/Broncos game.

So, to business.

Day 13 (01/01/2018)

I am very glad that I had to return that o-so-cool Jeep Compass to the car rental place yesterday morning, because I think I would have let inertia keep me at home.  But I had to return the car.  There was no one to give me a ride.  I was to cheap to try and order an Uber on the morning of New Years Day.  There were only two ways to get home: run or walk.  Given that it was cold as hell (and let's face it, 25 degrees is super cold in Austin) I thought running was the smarter choice.

I was scheduled for 3 miles and the run back from Hertz turned out to be 2.5 miles.  I am little disappointed that I didn't run another half mile just to meet my goal, but I was pretty miserable out there.  A lot of the run was uphill and sucking air that cold was terrible. The roads were mostly empty which was nice because I imagine a lot of car exhaust, while probably warmer, wouldn't have been fun to breathe either.  My lungs felt like they were on fire, and as I have written before I don't really get into the groove until after mile 2 anyway.  I did it though. In terms of handling the cold, I bundled up with a new running jacket I got for Christmas, and a pair of capris exercise pants (bad idea), gloves, and a hat.  My ankles were very cold and red, and I felt pretty silly.  I ran home and kicked off the new year on the right foot.

Later in the evening I went to the gym and did Day C of Bret Contreras' Strong Curves "Bootyful Beginnings."  While I admire the pun, I feel like a moron every time I post that.  The workout was good.  I am getting used to being the gym and night without being nervous about the men there.  No one has ever been rude, creepy, or threatening which I appreciate.   I gave my all on some movements, but I have to admit that toward the end I just punched the clock on few: the bodyweight one-legged Romanian deadlifts being a prime example.  I was a little sore this morning and my legs certainly felt tired. I feel like I am getting results.  My butt feels rounder I guess.  I keep catching myself walking with my hands on my butt.  I need to get over myself.

Day 14 (01/02/2018)

I was scheduled for a four mile run and I completed all four.  It was cold and miserable again this morning, but I learned from yesterday.  I wore a foot length pair of leggings under my usual running pants to prevent frosty ankles.  Like yesterday I never really felt like I got into the groove.  I was sucking air for longer than usual and I came back with a slower time than I would have liked.  I know that I am adapting to the weather and I lifted last night, but slower times are never fun.  I console myself with the fact that I was out there improving.  Many, I'm sure, stayed home because it was too cold.  I was out there fighting toward my goals.

Other Things:

Knitting: I am still working on the classic watch cap.  I got no knitting done whatsoever over the break.

Watching: The Playoffs!!! Go Chiefs!  I am trying to soak up as much football as possible as we approach the seasonal NFL drought.  Otherwise known as the "saddest time of the year". I'm not watching any shows at the moment and I don't see the point in listing things I am technically in the middle of but have taken a long hiatus from.

Reading: Stephen King's Different Seasons: Rita Heyworth and the Shawshank Redemption

Writing: The semester is over, so thankfully nothing. I am taking a much needed break.
